PIN IT!! Quick Reads and Infographics

Please find at least 10 types of quick reads that we could potentially use in our school yearbook and add them to our Pinterest Page (lciyrbk). Using the sheet provided (Quick Read Clip File) - list your reasons for selecting the quick read you selected AND what you think we could use it for in the school yearbook.

How to Use our Yearbook Pinterest Page:
Go to Pinterest.com and log in with the user name: lciyrbk@gmail.com and password lciyrbk.
Get the "pin-it" button to add to your computer (for google chrome go to this LINK)
or google "pin-it button" for whichever browser you use.

That way every time an image or page is viewed on the web, the pin it icon appears.

Once clicked, you can log in to the account on pinterest (if you haven't logged in already) and add the pins to whichever "board" is appropriate. In this case, we only have the one board called "quick reads".

Students should search for things like - quick reads for yearbook, alternative copy for yearbook, infographics, yearbook ideas for visual info etc.

Find a variety and jot down your notes on the paper. Submit to Ms. Silverman when you're finished.

Assignment for Thursday Oct. 15 - sorting, editing and uploading photos

1. Sort through the photos you have taken so far in this class. Use Adobe Bridge (as shown in class yesterday - or ask someone in the class who is familiar with Bridge for assistance - Brandon L., Anthony)
Create a Best of folder for whatever you are sorting through in your current folder.
Rate your best photos (star system) and move them (File - Move to) to your Best Of folder.

Some of you may be uploading today. Make sure you have images ready to upload by the end of the period.
Note for Lianah and Brandon S. - This link might help to convert your NEF files to JPG. But you can just focus on the jpg photos you have if it gets too complicated.

2. Edit your "best" photos in Photoshop (Elements, CS4 or CS6 - depending on what's available!)
Your edits should be minimal, (levels, contrast) but enough to improve any issues with contrast or exposure. Minimal cropping if necessary.

3. Save your edited photos with the following protocol:

EventName_# (1,2,3 etc.)_Photographer's Initials_OriginalFileName (DSC_0000).jpg

e.g. JrBVballvsRV_7_AD_DSC_1079.jpg

OR you can include more info if you have it such as a word like Action, Detail, Reaction etc. OR the name of the person in the photo!

HOW TO NAME YOUR FOLDERS IN THE YEARBOOK FOLDER
Your FOLDER should be named as follows and placed in the appropriate folder in the           Yearbook 15-16 folder.
    EVENT_(abbreviated ie.JRBVBALL)_YourNAME(LisaS)_DATE(MM_DD_YY)
    JrBoysVballvsRichview_AliciaD_10_05_15

4. Upload your photos to the appropriate folder in the Image Library in Yearbook Avenue. OR upload photos to Staff Inbox and then move them to appropriate folders. Make a new folder if necessary!

HOW?
Go to yearbookavenue.com to login.
Job # 96271
Name: first name lower case (BrandonL and S will be brandons or brandonl)
Password: yearbook16

Go to Create Tab and choose Image Library. Click Upload and find your edited jpg photos. You can only upload jpgs. psd files will not work!

If you're done, you can go to this link to learn more about rules of composition.
You can also update the yearbook production sheet!!! (Link on blog!)

Ms. Silverman will be starting the class on Friday by checking Yearbook Avenue. Make sure you have at least 3 photos uploaded! I know your initials!

Also, many of you have  not yet submitted the handouts from the other day on composition and rule of thirds and storytelling photos. Just pointing that out...

Design Assignment #1

Gather 5-10 images/graphics that related to YOUR sense of the IDENTITY of LCI. Using your handout where you came up with 3-5 adjectives to describe LCI and then attempted to find visual ideas to represent those adjectives, now your job is to try to find 5-10 images or graphics that you think really represent the idea of LCI.

Save the images into a folder that you name LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_THEME and drop that folder into the Yearbook folder - Yearbook 15-16 - THEME IDEAS folder.

We will continue viewing them in class on Monday.

Reporting Assignment #1

Part of the job of a yearbook staffer is to capture the year at LCI through photography, design and writing.
Remember that a yearbook has 5 different functions:
MEMORY
HISTORY
REFERENCE
PUBLIC RELATIONS
FUN!

This assignment is a lesson in gathering accurate information as a reference, but also to capture memories.

1. Sign out one of the journalist's notebooks - each notebook has a list of questions that need to be answered for any event throughout the year.

2. For assignment #1, choose an event - it could be Grade 9 week, or something else that is going on at LCI - First impression of cafeteria food, parenting class, lunchtime hangout, how people get to school etc.

3. Observe and jot down your observations as you answer the questions in the notebook.  Make sure you stick around long enough that you can get a sense of highlights that happened - atmosphere and mood are also good to note - or the outcome of the event if applicable.
Ask questions to get a few quotes from 2 or 3 people to get their impressions of the event. Be accurate - write down names and information exactly, so that we're truly gathering accurate information.

4. Go to the link list in this blog and click on the link for Journalist Info Form and fill in the blanks.

5. Celebrate that you've accomplished something for the yearbook by entering it into the Yearbook Production Sheet! (also found in the link list)

YEARBOOK 2014-15

Hello yearbookers,

Latest assignments:

Create a pinterest board - go to pinterest.com and set up an account so you can start adding inspiring images to share with each other and to collect as idea boards.

Photographers: Please go through the folders and make sure you that as you are selecting photos you are looking for storytelling photos - individual photos that tell a story and overall variety.

Remember the five main types of photos you want:
ENVIRONMENT
DETAIL/CLOSE-UP
PEOPLE
ACTION
REACTION

Emotions happen in the eyes people. Capture the eyes - especially when people are engaged in something and super focused.

Also, remember when photographing events to keep those five types of photos in mind.
AND....
Look for variety when shooting, selecting and designing to grab varieties of shots
Groups of people, two people, one person, worm's eye, bird's eye etc.

Look for great ideas for group shots for our department photos and any other types of photos or spreads that inspire you and post them to your new pinterest pages!
